Speaker:
Dr. Andreas Leven is leading the R&D activities of Nokia’s Subsystems product unit. In this role, he is responsible for the development of all coherent interfaces, comprising ASICs, optical front-ends, modules and firmware. Prior he was head of R&D for a measurement and sensing company, led the optics research labs of Bell Labs, and worked as a assistant researcher at Fraunhofer IAF. He received his PhD and Diploma degree from Karlsruhe University in 2000 and 1997, respectively.

Abstract:
Coherent technologies based on digital signal processing has transformed optical communications over the last 15 years. Now that we have reached the limits of spectral efficiency with these technologies, the question ‘what is the next big thing’ has been raised and discussed very passionately.
This talk tries to address this question by looking into past drivers for development in the optical communication space, as well as giving a high-level view of the current state of the communication industry.
